The Town Musicians of Berlin
When I first listened to the music of Vierergruppe Gschlössl, it reminded me of the German fairy tale The Town Musicians of Bremen by the brothers Grimm, which my grandmother had read to me repeatedly during my childhood. Gerhard is the donkey, Johannes the dog, Christian the cat, and Rudi the rooster. Vierergruppe Gschlössl is a quartet of young, active musicians who play with joy and abandon. Gschlössl's and Fink's compositions are jazzy, imaginative and ever so often humorously optimistic. While Fink's music is rather traditional,Gschlössl favours a more unconventional approach. This music was created in jazz clubs and at home. It is a nice example of hard work from a new generation of Berlin-based musicians at the grass roots. When I open my eyes I can see them work merrily like water pumps in the Berlin Air. Aki Takase, June 30, 2007
